Joe I wasn't that interested in this movie when it first came out. I thought it looked like any other romantic chick flick that couples see together. The movie turned out to be a fresh take on relationships, especially since it does not follow the usual structure of most movies. Your mind and attention get a healthy jog from the past to the present in this movie, and I have to say, this is a pretty effective way to hold an audience's attention. Another great thing about the movie is that you really get to see Zooey Deschanel's acting chops here. You adore her aloof quirkiness, but this adoration slowly turns into irritation once they break up and she makes the guy's life miserable, until you reach the end of the movie where you realize that she is really not the bad guy here, she was also, like the rest of us, just looking for that one true love that would be reason enough for her to settle down.
